Vintage Footage of Shah Amanullah (1919-1929)
Shah Amanullah overthrew the British as Protectorate of Afghanistan in the third Anglo-Afghan war. This footage is of his 18 day tour of Europe with his wife, Queen Soraya. Known as the modernizing King, he returned from this trip and tried to modernize Afghanistan too quickly. In 1929 the conservatives won and he was overthrown. He lived in exile in Rome. This footage is from his 1928 visit to Liverpool.
This is footage of him rallying Afghans to rise up against the British in 1919.
This is one of my favorite photos of Queen Soraya, who in the 1920s was the first Muslim woman to go unveiled. It was also one of the factors that lead to the uprising against her husband. Who would have thought an Afghan Flapper would cause such chaos! So here is the Helen of the Afghanistan Troy! She is totally fabulous!
